The hardware that makes up computer and networked video cameras is wide and varied.
In a home the network hardware may be nothing more than an Internet / ADSL modem or router connected to a computer. As an increasing number of devices are connected, the hardware items will range in businesses to include:

- IP cameras
- streaming audio / internet radio
- network switches (some with POE)
- multi function scan / copy / email /print devices
- NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices
- managed switches
- routers
- file servers
- IP telephones
All such devices are interconnected usually with Cat5e or Cat6 data cabling.
